Alfred Beier, Sr. was born January 28, 1930 on a farm in Raase,Sudentenland/Germany and departed this life on February 4, 2007 at the age of 77 years after losing a long, courageous battle with cancer. Alfred was the first of four children born to Marie (Nather) and Alfred Beier. Alfred grew up on a farm with his parents and three younger siblings, Walter, Bruno and Olga. In 1946, when Alfred was 16 years old, his family was deported by train to the small town of Gedern, West Germany. Alfred got his first job as a mechanic in Frankfurt and commuted everyday by train along with his father. The family later moved to Frankfurt. Alfred’s Aunt Olga and three children lived temporarily with Karoline’s family in Turkheim for several years. This is how Alfred and Karoline met and became friends. In 1952, Alfred’s family immigrated by ship to New York City. A priest from Plattsmouth, Nebraska sponsored their family, so they traveled by train to Plattsmouth to begin their new life in the United States. Alfred’s father worked construction in Omaha until he raised enough money to purchase a farm in Plattsmouth. For six years, Alfred and Karoline continued to communicate by mail. In 1957, Alfred purchased a farm south of Mineola, Iowa. In January 1958, he proposed to Karoline and returned to Germany for their wedding in Turkheim on January 4, 1958. Three days later, Alfred and Karoline departed for the United States to their farm by Mineola where they presently reside. Alfred’s first job in the States was working construction at the Omaha Stockyards. In 1959, Karoline gave birth to their first son Gerhard Joseph. In 1960, their second son, Alfred Theodore was born; and in 1963 their third son, Bernard John, was born. Alfred worked several years farming and working construction. He also co-owned and operated Bakers Delight Donut Shop in Glenwood for several years. In 1995, he retired from farming. He continued to stay busy remodeling homes. He also enjoyed making wood crafts for family and friends. Alfred was very conservation conscious. He liked working with his bulldozer building their farm ponds. He was proud of the fact that he only got the bulldozer stuck three times! Alfred enjoyed traveling the roads looking for the next project. He always enjoyed gatherings with family and friends. Alfred was a friend to many. Alfred was preceded in death by his mother and father. Those left to cherish Alfred’s memory are his loving wife, Karoline, sons, Gerhard and wife Josee of Glenwood, Alfred, Jr. and wife Brenda of Glenwood, Bernard of Minneapolis, MN, brother, Walter & wife Helen and brother, Bruno, sister, Olga, grandchildren, Joseph stationed in San Diego, California, Jennifer, Jessica, Blake, Chase and Nicholas of Glenwood, sister-in-law, Hildegard Baur of Germany. Alfred left us with many fond memories. He will be forever missed.
