Betty June (Cashatt) Merritt, 85 of Glenwood, Iowa passed away December 8, 2020 in Glenwood. She was born October 5, 1935 in Cimarron, Kansas to Herbert Franklin and Francis (Eblen) Cashatt.
Some of Betty’s favorite pastimes growing up were reading, roller skating, dancing and listening to music. She attended several schools growing up. Her father worked on road construction and the family moved along with him. They moved to Glenwood in 1952 where she graduated with the Class of 1953.
Betty was united in marriage to Lynn Merritt on April 10, 1954 in Yuma, Arizona. Lynn was serving in the U.S. Navy at the time. They were together 56 years until Lynn’s passing in 2010.
Betty had various jobs growing up. She babysat, was a store clerk, typist for an insurance company, nurse’s aide and librarian. She enjoyed them all, but she especially loved her job at the Glenwood Public Library where she remained for 28 years.
Betty was a longtime member of a local church serving in many church offices one being Deaconess. She taught Sunday School, Bible School and was on various boards. Betty joined the First Christian Church which is now the Vine Street Bible Church in 2009 and continued serving her Lord whenever asked. She especially liked kitchen duty whenever they prepared special lunches or meals. What brought Betty the most joy was being a wife, mother and grandmother. Family times were always her favorite.

I was very saddened to see this. Betty was a real nice lady. My condolences to the family.
Mrs. Merritt was quite well known in our household as my siblings and I spent countless hours at the Glenwood Public Library.
She was such a valuable asset to the library and I always enjoyed her patience with all of us kids. I had the chance to visit with her and catch up a few years ago when she was residing at Woodglen Apts. it was truly a pleasure. You touched many lives Betty, and for that we are thankful.
Every time I ran into Betty she would ask me how my folks were doing, even when she was doing well herself. She suffered so many losses but continued to soldier on. My condolences to her family.
I worked with Betty at the Glenwood Library for many years. We enjoyed our work there and Betty and I had many a laugh. Betty loved her family. She will be missed.
