Carol Eichelberger, 97, of Glenwood, Iowa passed away May 31, 2020 in Glenwood.
Marion Carol (Hammers) Eichelberger
March 31, 1923 – May 31, 2020.
Carol Eichelberger was born March 31, 1923 in Malvern, Iowa to the late Oliver James Hammers and Leona Joy (Anthony) Hammers.
Carol attended school in several different places beginning at Mt. Vernon, then Hillsdale, Tabor, Council Bluffs, finally graduating from Glenwood High School in 1940. She was always a straight “A” student.
When she was 9 years old, her parents divorced and she and her younger brother lived with their mother and grandparents. Carol always said of he childhood that her best friend was her pony “Buster”. Music was an important part of her youth. She, her mother on piano, her grandmother, aunt and uncle would spend evenings harmonizing the old Gospel hymns. It was in the Hillsdale Methodist Church choir that she met her future husband, Ray M. Eichelberger, Jr.
Ray and Carol were married on November 12, 1944 in the Hillsdale Methodist Church. They had three children; Larry Ray, Kay Ellen and Elaine.
Ray was a farmer and they started their married life on a tenant farm near Tabor, Iowa. After a few years they moved to another tenant farm north of Glenwood. Eventually they would own their own 40 acres on the “Pole Road” north of Glenwood.
While Ray farmed, Carol had “town” jobs. She worked several years for a local insurance office. The job she retired after 20 plus years was in the Mills County Treasurer’s office in the auto department.
Carol had many talents and interests. She baked and decorated wedding cakes. She loved photography and developed her own pictures. She was an excellent seamstress making most of her own clothes. She was an avid knitter, starting in WW II when she and her mother would knit socks and vests for the soldiers. She loved to knit and always had a project going. She wanted to help people. If she heard there was a need for caps for chemo patients, she knitted caps. Even in her last days she wanted to make masks for people during the Coronavirus pandemic. She also enjoyed quilting.
During her professional career she was a member of the Business & Professional Women’s club. She was a 50 year plus member of the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of Friends of the Library and always enjoyed the monthly get-togethers of the “40’s girls”, a group of her fellow classmates.
Carol is preceded in passing by her parents, stepfather Cecil Harris, husband Ray and younger brother Kenneth “Bud” Hammers.
She will be missed by her survivors: son Larry (Penny) Eichelberger of Glenwood and their children; Barbara Boston of Coin, Iowa, Ken (Robin) Eichelberger of Bellevue, Nebraska and Matt Eichelberger of Glenwood; daughter Kay (Linus) LeFever of Glenwood and their children; Clint LaFever (Gretchen) of Joliet, Illinois and Seth (Brandi) LeFever of Glenwood; daughter Elaine (Larry) Olson of Colorado Springs, Colorado and her children; Retired Army Green Beret Sean (Kelle) Roarty and Meliss Roarty, all of Colorado Springs, Colorado.; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; niece Krys Hammers, nephew Steve (Thea) Hammers and many friends.
Memorial donations may be made to the Glenwood Chapter DAR %Lana White, 35809 Paddock Avenue, Hastings, Iowa 51540 or Friends of the Library.
Interment, Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, Iowa.

A very nice obituary for a very nice person. Years ago, I worked part time for her in Court House. She had such a wonderful sense of humor, I always looked forward to going to work for her and she had so many friends. We stayed in touch through the years, life was good when she was around. She will be missed.

I loved hearing Carol’s story of riding Buster in the timber – both of them drinking from the same clear stream. We will miss her wonderful smile & sense of humor!
Carol was a very nice person and will be missed. May her memories give you comfort at this time.
I’m so sorry to hear of Carol’s passing. I thought of reaching out to her several times over the last few years. She gave me and my husband an opportunity to raise and grow our family on a beautiful acreage. I’ve always kept Carol in my thoughts and admired her for her very generous heart. Please know I’m thinking of you all, and will always appreciate the kindness given to me.
