Donald Allen Malcom, a long time business owner on the Glenwood, Iowa square, died at home Saturday, October 19, 2024 of complications of COPD.

Don was born in Tabor, Iowa at his grandparents home while his father was serving in the Army. Following his birth he and his mother lived the army life in several states before returning home to the family farm east of Tabor following his father’s discharge. Growing up the family happily vacationed in Minnesota fishing for a week each summer leaving the farm work behind. He attended Randolph, Iowa elementary school and graduated from Fremont Mills High School. At that time he attended Universal Trade School in Omaha for appliance refrigeration.

He then served as service manager and district sales manager for Kelvinator appliances until July 1969 when he joined Howard Mintle as a partner in the Mintle Company. Don purchased the business in 1976 changing the name to Don’s Furniture and Appliance serving Glenwood and the surrounding area as a well-established retail store offering a variety of furniture and appliances for residential use. His focus was quality products and customer service. Don retired in 2012 after 40 years.

Don enjoyed his hobbies and friends raising hunting dogs, hunting, fishing, boating, water skiing, motorcycling and hot rod tractors. Never one to stay still, he found golfing, camping, photography, gardening, and building grandfather clocks and rocking chairs kept him busy after retirement. He was a founding member of the Southwest Iowa Sportsman Club in Glenwood and rode his Harley Davidson until his health declined. Spending time outdoors was especially enjoyable, especially with family and friends.

Loved ones preceding Don in death include his father and mother, Kenneth and Harriet Malcom; infant brother, Larry Malcom; sister and husband, Barbara Malcom Okerbloom and Dr. John Okerbloom and their son Nathan.

Don is survived by his wife Mary Thomas Malcom of Glenwood; children Teresa (Lloyd) Needham, Michael (Lori) Malcom, David (Carol) Malcom, Stephen Malcom, Ken Cousins, Mary (Mark) Halstead; brother Roger (Penny) Malcom; 14 grandchildren and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Interment: Tabor Cemetery, Tabor, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed to Silver City Fire and Rescue.
