Donald Roy Schade

Donald Roy Schade, 82 of Glenwood, IA entered into eternal rest on Sept. 23, 2013 at the Hospice With Heart facility in Glenwood, IA. Don was born Oct. 23, 1930 on the 4-generation Schade farm east of Glenwood to Roy Everett and Bessie Osborne Schade. He attended Reasoner country school and was the only one in his class all eight years. He graduated from Glenwood High School in 1948. Don was in Hi-Y music groups, barbershop quartet, on the baseball team, played trombone, first chair, in band and 2nd chair trombone in the Iowa All State Band.

Don loved hunting pheasants, small game, and he and his white shepherd dog, Tim, hunted coons.

He married Betty Thiele in 1950 and they celebrated 63 years together. Don enjoyed attending their sons’ ball games and wrestling matches. He also spent time woodworking and completed several beautiful doll houses. The family liked camping and traveling, going from coast to coast and to Alaska. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, charter member of Jay Cees and SWISC.

Don worked as a mechanic for Dick Hiatt at the Ford Garage for 25 years then went out on his own with a garage and car wash. He started at the Glenwood State Hospital School in 1979, first in the power plant and then as lead mechanic in charge of the transportation and farm equipment garages until retirement in 1995.

Retirement years, he and Betty spent their winters in Mission, Texas at the Bentsen Grove Resort. Don loved his pool competitions there and had trophies to prove it.

Preceding Don in death were his parents and sister, Helen Schade Shupe. Survivors include his wife, Betty Schade of Glenwood, IA; sons, Steven of Round Rock, TX; David of Eagle River, AK; Gary of Bellevue, NE; grandchildren, Bobbi Schade, Brandy Tongoona, Trevor Schade, Sarah Schade and Michael Schade; great-grandsons, Ranon and Kaler Schade; sister, Alice and husband Darrell Heath of Council Bluffs, IA; nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many friends.

Interment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church.
