Duane H. Stone, 85, of Glenwood, Iowa, entered into eternal rest on December 11, 2008 in Glenwood, Iowa. He was born August 28, 1923 in Mills County, Iowa to James Floyd & Mary Suffina (Andrews) Stone.
Duane graduated from Glenwood High School in 1940 and enlisted into the U.S. Army on February 19, 1941. He was then sent overseas to Ireland and Scotland for the invasion of North Africa. While he was there he was promoted to corporal and squad leader of a rifle squad. The unit went to Algeirs in North Africa on November 8, 1942. They moved to Tunis in January of 1943 as a unit. The Germans made an all out move towards the west. The unit was left high and dry at the front. On February 17th, he and the rest of his unit became POW’s and spent the next 26 months in Germany after traveling from North Africa to Italy and onward to the camp located not far from Berlin in Germany. After his escape he returned to the U.S. in June of 1945. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on August 31, 1945 after he had served for 4 years and 6 months of duty. In recent years, Duane was interviewed with Ollie North and was able to share his experiences that he and so many others endured.
Duane was united in marriage to Marjorie Mae Hammer on July 20, 1946 in Glenwood, Iowa. To this union 5 children were born, Steven, Susan, Dennis, Kevin and Lisa. Duane was employed by the government as an Administrative Supply Technician for the National Guard, and was a member from 1940-83. Duane was a member of the First Battalion 168th Infantry 34th Division Red Bull, First Christian Church, American Legion Post 141 and the Masonic Lodge.
Following Duane’s retirement, he was employed as a bus driver for Foster Grandparents, Head Start and Glenwood School District. Duane was a devoted family man and always enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s activities. He loved to work in his yard and feed the squirrels and birds. He was also a member of the Glenwood Men’s Bowling League for many years. Marge and Duane enjoyed 62 years together. They loved dancing and being with their family and friends.
Preceding Duane in death were his parents, brothers, Warren and Irwin Stone; sisters, Onice Stiles, Vera Andress, Anna Templeton-Clifford, Virgie McClain, Viva Knuppel and Lorraine Kruse. He is survived by his wife Marjorie Stone of Glenwood, Iowa; children, Steven & wife Cathy Stone of Glenwood, Iowa; Susan & husband Dennis Lincoln of Pacific Junction, Iowa; Dennis & wife Linda Stone of Sewickley, Pennsylvania; Kevin Stone; Lisa & husband Marty Stivers all of Glenwood, Iowa; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
