Ervin R. “Kudge” Kizzier, 87, of Glenwood, IA, entered into eternal rest on January 8, 2008 at Glen Haven Home in Glenwood, IA. He was born August 9, 1920 in Center Township, Mills County, IA to Lester Freeman & Nancy Anna (Wright) Kizzier. Ervin was raised in Glenwood and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1939.
Ervin was in the National Guard prior to enlisting into the Navy in 1942 during WWII. He was an apprentice Seaman and Torpedoman’s Mate serving in the Pacific on the USS Pilotfish. His submarine was in Tokyo Bay when the peace treaty was signed with the Japanese. After faithfully serving his country, he was honorably discharged on Oct. 16, 1945.
On February 19, 1944, Ervin was united in marriage to Malinda Johanna Hansen. To this union two sons were born, Bruce and Monte. The family resided in Glenwood where Ervin and his father, Lester established Kizzier and Son Filling Station in 1948. The business remained under the Kizzier name until it was sold in 1973. Ervin was also employed at the Glenwood State School, now known as Glenwood Resource Center, from 1965-85. While there, he served as an auto service instructor in the Manpower Development Training Act and later became the manager of the transportation department until his retirement.
Ervin was active in the Glenwood community for many years serving on the Glenwood Lake Park Board, Mills County Planning and Zoning Board, Glenwood Fire and Rescue, and was a proud 61 year member of the Glenwood American Legion Post 141. He was a devoted member to the Trinity Lutheran Church and served on numerous committees throughout his lifetime.
Preceding Ervin in death were his parents, wife Malinda on May 22, 1996, and sister Genevieve Mintle. He is survived by sons Bruce & wife Linda Kizzier of Papillion, NE; Monte & wife Kandice Kizzier of Battle Creek, MI; grandchildren Kyle Kizzier of Washington, D.C.; Casey & Sarah Kizzier and their daughter Sophia Kizzier of Omaha, NE; Lisa & Joey Francisco of Beverly Hills, MI and Cody Kizzier of Honolulu, HI; extended relatives and a host of friends.
