Flora Louis (Johnson) Jens, 90 of Glenwood, Iowa passed away Aug. 21, 2016 in Glenwood. She was born July 24, 1926 to Marvin Laverne Johnson and Allie Irene (Wriedt) Johnson. She always told people that her birthday was during thrashing season. Flora was the youngest of two living children, as she grew up with her older sister, Dorothy Jean on their family farm.
Flora attended country school through eighth grade. She graduated from Glenwood High School in 1943 at the young age of sixteen since she had begun first grade at the age of four. Due to the shortage of teachers during World War II, “Normal Teacher Training” classes were offered in high school and continued in the summers through Peru State College. At the early age of 17, Flora started teaching in a country school east of Silver City. She taught for four years.
Flora met Ed Jens at a dance in Mineola, Iowa on December of 1945. They became engaged on her 20th birthday, July 24, 1946 and were married December 18 of that same year at her, then, Grandparents house. Ed and Flora lived and worked on the farm where Flora was born and raised until September of 1981, when they moved to Glenwood in her grandparent’s house. They were married 65 years when Ed passed on June 24, 2012. During their years of marriage, they farmed and raised livestock. They also were blessed with two daughters; Patricia Ann on February of 1949 and Barbara Jean on January of 1956. Flora taught Sunday School, participated in United Methodist Women and Mills County Farm Bureau Women’s organizations. She also assumed leadership positions within these groups as Sunday School Superintendent and Women’s Chair for both UMW and Farm Bureau Women.
Flora was preceded in death by her mother, father, husband, sister, Dorothy (Johnson) Jens, infant brother, Harlan, three sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law.
