Kenneth Swarts McMahan, son of Thomas David and Mae Swarts McMahan, was born August 3, 1911 in Stanberry, Missouri. He attended elementary and secondary school in Silver City, Iowa, graduating from high school in 1928.
On April 21, 1933, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Biermann at St. John Lutheran Church in Mineola, Iowa.
To this union three children were born; Donald Kenneth, Dolores Marie and Thomas David.
For 38 years Kenneth was employed as a Bulk Agent for Standard Oil Company.
He served as the first fire chief for Silver City and held that position for 30 years. He also was a member of the town council and school board.
Kenneth silently and valiantly battled bone cancer until June 9, 2010 when he peacefully left all the pain behind. He will be remembered fondly for his genuine interest in people, for his gentle and compassionate spirit and for his ever pleasant personality and positive attitude. One of his favorite pastimes in retirement was torch craft, making Conestoga wagons, windmills, etc. His love of fishing and hunting was also such a big part of his life and when he could no longer be active, continued to enjoy watching the birds, especially the hummingbirds.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Elizabeth in 2001; son, Donald; sisters, Jane Stortenbecker and Naomi LeVier.
Survivors include his daughter Dolores and husband Marion Ellis of Phoenix, Arizona; son Thomas and wife Linda McMahan of Buena Vista, Colorado; grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; sisters Mamie Rusch and Geraldine Perkins of Council Bluffs, Iowa;
Gretchen Hodges of Temecula, California; extended relatives and an abundance of friends.
