Daughter of Walter and Katherine Ann (Norstad) Coffey was born on a farm December 25, 1911 in the Sidney, Iowa area. Late in 1928 her father purchased and moved the family to a farm southeast of Glenwood, Iowa.

She graduated from Glenwood, Iowa High School in 1928. During the years from 1917 until 1935 she helped care for her invalid grandmother who passed away in 1935. On December 16, 1935 she married William Eugene Van Orsdel in Omaha, Nebraska.

They started their married life on a farm next to his parents in the Hillsdale community, Mills County, Iowa. In 1946 they moved to a farm near Lenox, Iowa. To this union three daughters were born, Kathryn Marlene Buchanan, Karen Joyce Andrew and Carolyn Jean Geisler.

After her husband passed away she stayed on the farm for a short period of time, then she moved to Creston, Iowa. Later she moved to Glenwood, Iowa and then to Council Bluffs, Iowa.
