Marcena Messinger, 91 of Glenwood, Iowa entered into eternal rest on Jan. 18, 2013 at the Hospice With Heart facility in Glenwood. She was born on Nov. 27, 1921 in Danbury Connecticut to William & Theresa (Cipollone) Kastanas.
Marcena was raised in Newark where she attended school. She later met William Dale Messinger in Brooklyn, New York while he was in port. The couple were united in marriage July 8, 1944 in Newark, New Jersey. To this union two sons were born, James & Joseph. Marcena moved to Glenwood in 1947 to raise the boys until Bill was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1953. She enjoyed being a homemaker and did a lot of canning from their large garden. Marcena was a talented seamstress not only for her family, but for many people in the Glenwood area. Along with sewing, she did a lot of knitting and had a great passion for traveling to visit relatives and friends. Her family was very important to her and she took wonderful care of all of them.
Preceding Marcena in death were her parents, husband, Bill in 1991; brother, James Kastanas and sister, Sylvia Bartkus. She is survived by her sons, James & wife Ruth Messinger of Glenwood, IA: Joseph & wife Joan Messinger of Sparks, Nevada; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, Anthony Kastanas; sister, Mary Cole both of Parsippany, New Jersey; several nieces, nephews, extended relatives & many friends.
Interment will be at a later date.
