Margaret Mae (Maxted) Altekruse, 92, of Glenwood, Iowa, entered into eternal rest on Sept. 27, 2006 at her home in Glenwood. She was born Jan. 8, 1914 in Tabor, Iowa to Hertel and Susan (Raynard) Maxted.

Margaret graduated from Tabor High School and attended Simpson College. She was united in marriage to Haldon Charles Altekruse on June 17, 1934 in Nashua, IA. They lived in Ashland and Ralston, NE while working for Peoples Natural Gas. Haldon and Margaret moved to Glenwood and owned and operated Altekruse Shoe store together until their retirement on February 29, 1984.

Margaret was a very active member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Glenwood where she was the church historian, served as warden and on the altar guild, she taught Sunday School and was a Deanery Representative for Southwest Iowa and was also Diocesan Chairman of the Bishop Relief Fund for over 30 years. She belonged to the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa. She was instrumental in coordinating Operation Santa and was director of the Mills County Storehouse. Margaret was honored for Glenwood’s Homecoming as Grand Marshall.

Preceding Margaret in death were her parents, husband Haldon in 1991, and brother Jim Maxted. She is survived by cousin Howard Clendenen of West Des Moines, Iowa, her church family from St. John’s Episcopal Church and a host of friends.
