Michael Ray Schmidt, 68 of Altoona, Iowa, formerly of Glenwood, Iowa, passed away June 8, 2020 in Altoona. He was born on January 19, 1952 in Sheldon, Iowa to Roger and Anna Mae (Reiter) Schmidt.
Michael taught at Glenwood Middle School for 1 year in 1975 before continuing the rest of his 36 year teaching career at Glenwood High School as a writing teacher. He was also an accomplished coach of the large group speech team and advisor for the school page published in the weekly Opinion Tribune newspaper.
Michael was very involved with Grace United Methodist Church in Glenwood and Adventure Life Church in Altoona, serving as a lay speaker at both churches. He greatly valued both church communities.
Michael also was an avid bicycle rider who in many years rode parts of RAGBRAI.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Anna Mae Schmidt of Glenwood. Survivors include his wife, Deborah (Doyle) Schmidt of Altoona, Iowa; brother and sister-in-law Kevin and Barbara Schmidt of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; sons Eric Schmidt of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Scott Schmidt of Andover, Minnesota; daughter-in-law Megan (Parise) Schmidt, wife of Scott; granddaughter Maria Schmidt, daughter of Megan and Scott, several other extended relatives.
Memorial donations may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church.
Interment to be held at a later date.

Mr. Schmidt was one of my favorite teachers. He was intelligent, witty, and a great conversationalist!! He will be missed.
Mike will be missed by so many. He was a wonderful teacher, actor, and friend. Debbie and family are in our hearts during this heartbreaking time. May he shine on us all and his family find peace. Love, Kathy and Bob
Mr. Schmidt was the greatest! I learned so much from him as a teacher and friend. My heart goes out to Debbie and family. Prayers are being sent that they find peace.
Mr.Schmidt was such a powerful role model and excellent teacher. I was grateful for his voice speaking into my life during high school and even for years after. Praying for grace over his family and close community as they grieve.
Mike made a huge impact on our church in the two years since moving to Altoona. He gave generously of his time, finances and abilities to help us all grow. He was a good friend and a great encourager, and he taught us many things. He can never be replaced, and he left a legacy that we will never forget.
We all appreciated what a wonderful teacher Mr. Schmidt was. He was tough but fair. Extremely creative and will be missed by so many. My family is praying for the family he left behind. Until you meet up again in heaven. May God give you peace. Valerie class of 1986

It was an honor to know and serve with Mike at Adventure-Life Church. I will miss his quirky and spontaneous humor. My prayers are with Debbie and family. We introduced ourselves to Mike and Debbie the first church service they attended here in Altoona. Their warmth and kindness made us feel like we’d been friends for years. Great listeners, very caring, so much to offer. Debbie, you and your family are in our prayers.
The Schmidts were the perfect neighbors for my family in countless ways. Mike was a genuinely great educator, a great friend and a great man. This is a huge loss and I am heartbroken Debbie, his sons and granddaughter.
So sorry for this tragic and unexpected loss. Mike was a pleasure to be around and will very much missed. He was truly a servant of God.

Mike had a way of making everyone around him feel comfortable and relaxed. Our family learned a lot listening to him speak at church and enjoyed all the meaningful dramas in which he was involved. His presence will be missed. Our hearts go out to Debbie as we continue to pray for the family.

My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you during this difficult time Debbie.. She and Mike were one of the thoughtful amazing couple who always were there for everyone and brought so much joy and laughter in all of our lives and always were ready for any adventure and taught so many people wonderful lessons with their wisdom and open heart. He will be so sorely missed. May God comfort you, your family, and friends.

I only had the chance to know Mike for a couple of years when he and Deb moved to Altoona. Nevertheless I will treasure the time that I knew him. His wisdom, compassion, and humor will remain with me forever. I know that God has some new projects to keep him busy till we all can join him.
