Norman Ellsworth VanSickle, 90, of Silver City, Iowa, entered into eternal rest on March 16, 2006 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs. He was born February 25, 1916 in Bowbells, ND to Frederick LeForrest & Lelah B. (McKinney) VanSickle. Norman was raised in Barron, Wisconsin and graduated from high school there. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Norman was employed with Johnson Controls before entering the Navy (See Bee) during WWII. He was united in marriage to Verna Eloise Towns on July 3, 1947 in Anchorage, Alaska. To this union three children were born, twin girls Sally and Susan and a son Jan. The family traveled extensively throughout Norman’s career as a Civil Engineer for sanitary waste water treatment plants. He was the proud inventor of an inexpensive portable verticle-projection range pole that was used in surveying triangulation. He was hired by many plants and was well known for his expertise in the field. Norman was a political activist and also enjoyed fishing. Preceding him in death were his parents, infant twin daughter Susan, two brothers, Fred and Harris VanSickle. He is survived by his wife Verna VanSickle of Silver City, IA; daughter: Sally L. Vitamvas of Silver City, IA; son: Jan VanSickle of Denver, CO; 5 grandchildren; brother: Charles VanSickle of Madison, WI; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
