Helping Families and Friends Honor Their Loved One for over 100 years.

R. Louise Sorensen Irvin

Memorials may be made to the Glenwood Public Library.

INTERMENT: Silver City Cemetery, Silver City, Iowa.

Louise, daughter of Archer George (Shorty) and Ethel G. (Snipes) Williams, was born May 21, 1939 at an Iowa City, Iowa hospital in Johnson County. She was the only child out of six to be born in a hospital. The family moved from Hastings, Iowa in 1939 to Glenwood where Shorty had found employment at the Glenwood State Hospital School.

Louise attended school at East Elementary, West Elementary, Junior High and High School, all in Glenwood, graduating in 1957. Before graduation she was employed by the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company where she continued to work until 1963 when the local company switched to dial. During this time of employment she married Jerry J. Van Scyoc in 1958. Their daughter, Laura, was born in 1963, six days after the telephone company switched over to the dial system.

Louise was then employed by a local bakery, by the Chamber of Commerce as a secretary for several years, and later found employment with the Mills County Sheriffs Department, where her parents were dispatchers (in their retirement years) for the local law enforcement.

Louise enjoyed being a member of BPW of Glenwood and the Keg Creek Antique Machinery Club, where she was a charter member.

She was also a member of the Southwest Iowa Peace Officers organization where she revived the newsletter and continued the quarterly information sheet for many years before retiring after 31 years with the sheriffs department. She attended the annual civil school for law enforcement in Des Moines where she met lasting friends and maintained correspondence with them from all over the state of Iowa.

She met and married Jim Sorensen, and to this brief union, Richard Sorensen was born in 1973.

She later met James Irvin and they joined families in 1982 at the rural acreage north of Glenwood. Both Louise and Jim enjoyed music and invited many people to their home for music jams, birthday parties, family get-togethers”Óor any excuse for getting together with friends and family. She especially loved participating in the board games with friends and family and enjoyed spending time with one of her favorite companions, her cat, Mickey. She and Jim took pleasure traveling in the camper and the annual trek to the Avoca festival to listen to music and the camaraderie with friends from all over the United States who they maintained correspondence with. Louise and Jim married in May of 2003 after 23 years of sharing each others love and companionship. Very seldom would you see one without the other.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Doris Leuzinger, Eleanor Williams, brother, Donald “÷Pete’ Williams, grandson, Chandler Sorensen and her beloved husband, Jim.
