Richard Allen “Dick” Bowden, 73, of Glenwood, Iowa entered into eternal rest on March 21, 2011 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was born December 28, 1937 in Tekamah, Nebraska to Darald Basil & Eunice Pearl (Robinson) Bowden. Dick graduated from Tekamah High School in 1955 and attended Peru State College.
Dick was united in marriage to Janice Ann Tranmer on July 26, 1959 in Tekamah, Nebraska. To this union three children were born, Mike, Lorri and Greg. Dick faithfully served his country in the Coast Guard. Dick & Jan lived in Charleston, South Carolina and later moved to Omaha, Nebraska. In 1973, their family moved to Glenwood, Iowa. Dick retired from the Glenwood Resource Center in 2000 after 23 years of service. The family loved taking annual vacations together and in recent years Dick and Jan enjoyed traveling the coastal areas to be near the water. He was an avid supporter of youth and coached not only in Glenwood, but also in Malvern and Omaha, combining 45 years of dedication. Dick, along with other local individuals, was instrumental in starting the Lil Rams Football, as well as helping in the development of the baseball complex. He and Jan were youth leaders for their church both in Omaha and Glenwood. Dick was devoted to his family, church and youth throughout his entire life. Even though he began battling health issues, he could be seen at his grandchildren’s activities as he continued to show his support. He was a true family man in every way. His love of humor and sharing of stories will forever be remembered.

Our thoughts and prayers a with you at this difficult time. I know you all have many memories to cherish. Dick was a witness to us all – he loved God, his family (and was so proud of each one) and was a friend to so many.
My heart broke when I saw the notice of Dick passing on. I will always be thankful for the time he dedicated to helping the young men on our junior high teams at Malvern. I always enjoyed his company and help.

I know you all miss Dick/dad/grandpa! I’m imagining his entrance into Heaven — no more illness, no pains, no tears, etc.: Only joy! I like to imagine how he has joined Savior, family and friends who’ve gone before, including former neighbors Dick and Pat! It’s seems just like yesterday… I was in high school, going down to see my neighbors (Dick, Jan and Lorri)! I know your sorrow, but I also realize Heaven’s joy with Dick’s “homecoming”!
Our deepest sympathies go out to your entire family. We know you all will miss Dick in your lives. God’s Peace.
Lori and Randy, so sorry to hear about your dad, our sympathy to all your family
Dear Jan, Lorri, and family:
I am so sorry to hear of Dick’s passing. I have many wonderful memories from those years playing softball on his team back in the mid-seventies! We fondly nicknamed him “Chip” because of the way his cheeks looked when he sported the hard hat softball helmet while hitting the ball. 🙂 He always had a smile on his face and showed all of us girls how to have fun. Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers.
Rachelle
Greg, Mike, Lori, and Jan,
Many great memories, will never forget the support Dick provided to all of us whatever the sport season…my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
i enjoyed working with dick for many years. he was pleasant to work and associate with and the state of iowa benefited for his service. bob atha – retired business manager @ iowa veterans home in marshalltown.
I used to see Dick at our quarterly institution Business Managers Meetings. Even though it has been many years since I saw him last, I can still see his smile. He was a genuine character, and always enjoyable to talk to. …Mike Anderson, retired Business Manager, Iowa State Penitentiary
Greg, sorry to hear about your dad. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.
I share in your sorrow as we were classmates from the first grade through one year of college. As kids our South Tekamah team completed against his North team in all types of sandlot sport games. His Father’s auto repair garage became our NCAA B.B. court. It seemed so huge then. After that we were team mates and I can tell you that he loved sports and was always competitive. I will cherish those memories and times with him. God’s Peace to you all. Fred Koudele
Greg, Mike, Lori and Jan, I’m so sorry to hear about Dick. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Greg, I can still see him shaking his head at us!
