Interment: Saturday, May 25, 2025, 11 A.M., Mamre Cemetery, Stanton, Iowa.

Richard Ervin Gotschall, 72, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, formerly of Glenwood and Red Oak, Iowa, entered into rest on April 5th, 2024 at his home in Council Bluffs, Iowa.  He was born September 12th, 1951 in Clarinda, Iowa to Irvie and Olga (Hunt) Gotschall.

Richard was raised in College Springs, Iowa and graduated from College Springs/South Page High School in 1969.  He attended college at Iowa State and Wichita State University before joining the Air Force.  Upon ending his service in the military he joined the working world beginning his career in construction working as a project estimator at Oakview Construction in Red Oak, Iowa where he eventually would become a partial owner of the company.

Richard was united in marriage to the late Candace (Peterson) Gotschall on September 24, 1977 in Red Oak, Iowa.  To this union with Candace two sons were born.  Matthew and Mitchell.  Richard enjoyed his family, leading the family’s construction business and living life to its fullest.  He will be remembered for his fervor to build and create things and support his family and those around him in any way he could.  Upon selling his interest in Oakview Construction a few years later after owning a baseball card shop and trying a few other careers he started Glenwood Contracting with his wife Candace.  In 2022 Richard concluded his professional career as a professional Claims Examiner for National Indemnity, a Berkshire Hathaway company.  He enjoyed over the years traveling with his family, playing golf and especially enjoyed chasing Kentucky Derby dreams through the ownership of thoroughbred racehorses. 

On April 1st, 2011 Richard was united in marriage to Ruth (Graybill) Gotschall in Council Bluffs, Iowa. 

Preceding Richard in death was his wife of 31 years Candace Gotschall, father Irvie Gotschall, mother Olga Gotschall and brother Roger Gotschall.  He is survived by his wife, Ruth Gotschall of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sons Matthew and wife Kate Gotschall and their daughters Lauren and Emily Gotschall of Cave Creek, Arizona; Mitchell Gotschall and wife Carrie Gotschall and their three children Carter, Penelope and Mila Gotschall of Oakdale, Minnesota; brother Randy and wife Kim Gotschall of Braddyville, Iowa, their son Eric Gotschall of Overland Park, Kansas and their daughter Beth Gotschall and her daughter Ari of Shambaugh, Iowa; sister in law Ruthanne Gotschall of Shenandoah, Iowa; nephew Adam and wife Cara Gotschall of Bennington, Nebraska and their son William; niece Sara Gotschall of Omaha, Nebraska and her daughter Adalyssa and a host of friends and extended family.

Memorials may be made to the Thanksgiving Lutheran Church 3702 S. 370 Plaza  Bellevue, Nebraska 61823.

    Matt, Mitch so sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. When you guys were kids and living in Red Oak we had a lot of great times with your parents not to mention working with your dad at Oakview as a sub contractor..Tough but fair!!! Prayers for you guys.. Doug & Shelle Cashatt

    We will always remember Richard’s many trips to Dallas with Candace and Enola. My Dad (Sandy) so appreciated getting to see his sister and we all enjoyed visiting with Richard and Candace. Our love and prayers go out to Ruth, Matthew and Mitchell and families.

    Rich was a good friend for over 40 years. I met him while working at Oakview Construction back in 1979. We continued to be friends down through the years and occasionally visited and made phone calls to check in. He was a good friend and I will miss him.
