Roger William Wissing, 83, of Glenwood, Iowa, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2024 at Glen Haven Village in Glenwood, Iowa.
Visitation will be held Monday, November 11th from 10 am to 11 am at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Glenwood, Iowa followed by Mass of Christian Burial with Father Daniel Siepker presiding.
Roger was born at home in Saint Libory, Nebraska on September 21, 1941, to John and Lorraine (Leschinsky) Wissing. He grew up on the family farm and attended Saint Libory Elementary School and Saint Paul High School. In 1962, he married Beverly Nelson, with whom he shared five children: Jeff, Michela, Shirley, Candy, and Randy. In 1985 Roger married the love of his life, Theresa McIntosh, gaining an additional daughter, Kinowa.
Roger farmed in Saint Libory for a number of years before working at the Swift Meat Packing Plant in Grand Island, Nebraska, where he earned the nickname “Farmer” from his coworkers. After Swift closed its Grand Island location, he transferred to the Glenwood, Iowa plant and worked until it’s closure. He then spent several years at RONCO Construction in Omaha, taking on various construction jobs until his retirement.
A lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Roger enjoyed sports. In his younger years, he boxed in the Golden Gloves, played baseball, and loved golf. Despite facing numerous health challenges, Roger’s fighting spirit never wavered; he confronted each challenge with determination and resilience.
Roger is survived by his wife, Theresa Wissing; his children Jeff (Tammy) Wissing, Michela (Jill) Bahensky, Shirley (Gregg) Schultz, Candy (Jon) Jakubowski, Randy Wissing and Melinda and Kinowa (Brian) Bendt; twelve grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, brothers: Norman (Geri) Wissing, Alan (Becky) Wissing, Steve (Brenda) Wissing, sisters: Jan Culp and Marjean (Rick) Pedersen. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Carol Fenton, and his great-grandson Connor Amsberry.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Parkinson’s Foundation or Disabled American Veterans.
Inurnment to be held at a later date.
