Sandy was raised on the farm in rural Malvern and graduated from Malvern High School in 1961. She attended Drake University for two years. She went back to college in her mid-50’s and earned her Bachelor of Education Degree and taught Montessori for 10 years.

Sandy met the love of her life, George Burton Peterson, and they were united in marriage on June 30, 1963. To this union three children were born, Georganne, Jonathan Burton and Jonelle Kay. Sandy was an exceptional person. She certainly cared about all her students. My daughters were always comfortable and felt positive under Sandy’s piano guidance. Sandy grew up near Tim’s childhood home. She rode the school bus with Tim’ and often tied his shoes while he was in Kindergarten. Sandy attended our wedding. Sandy accompanied Katrina in those Iowa State Fair Talent shows traveling to Des Moines with us. Sandy and Georganne taught my girls how to swim. They were so patient when little Celine jumped off the high dive. It was so touching when Sandy played the piano for Tim’s funeral. She could play anything! Sandy was truly gifted not only on the piano but as the nicest, kind lady. Sandy was a classy lady. I am so sorry for your family’s loss. Hugs, hugs.

Sandy’s passing creates a void in the community. She was kind, compassionate and caring to so many people that she interacted with from her family business, to her passion for children, music and providing recognition for many track/field and cross country athletes over the years. She was one of our true supporters. Love, hugs and prayers to the family now and as you navigate the future.

  • Scott & Mary Hiatt Posted August 6, 2024 9:13 am

Dear Georganne and family, We’re so very sorry for your loss. It’s hard to believe we won’t see her big smile and caring condolences the next time we visit your funeral home. She was one of Glenwood’s greatest treasures. One of my favorite memories about her was when she was teaching Montesorri and had our daughter Chloe. We were at the open house and were looking at all the cute little drawings the kids had made. Then we found Chloe’s, it was truly terrible lol. We laughed and looked at her and she said, “Yeah, fine motor skills ain’t her thing.” We still laugh and tease her about that to this day. It’s never easy losing your Mom. Make sure you share the fun stories with each other to ease your broken hearts. God bless you.

  • Susan Reed Posted August 6, 2024 9:38 am
