Helping Families and Friends Honor Their Loved One for over 100 years.

Shirley Irene Kaufman

Celebration of Life Service: Saturday, August 10, 2024, 10:30 A.M., Glenwood Community Church, 56646 240th Street, Glenwood, Iowa.

Shirley Irene Kaufman, 91, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, formerly of Denver, Colorado, and Omaha, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2024, surrounded by her family, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha.  She was born on February 1, 1933, to Henry and Elizabeth (Eckhardt) Gable in Scottsbluff, NE.  She graduated from Gering High School in Gering, Nebraska and lived in the Scottsbluff-Gering area until her move to Denver in1980.

Shirley worked in the insurance industry for most of her working career and retired at the age of 77, at which time she moved to Omaha to be closer to family.  She attended Westside Church in Omaha where she was associated with a wonderful Sunday School class and made many good friends.  She also volunteered at Lakeside Hospital in Omaha for several years.  Her love for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren was so strong and her greatest joy was to spend time with her family.  Her love for the Lord was also so evident and we rejoice that she is now in His presence. However, she will be greatly missed.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Betty and Ruth, one brother, Harold, and her daughter, Tamera Matthews.  Survivors include her daughter, Deb (Mark) Smeltzer of Glenwood, Iowa; son, Kevin (Shannon) Kaufman of Mitchell, Nebraska; Tamera’s husband, Bob Matthews, of Naples, Florida; six grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren, and many friends.

Memorials may be directed to the family to be used for a not yet determined charitable foundation.

Interment to be held at a later date.

My sympathies to your entire family – Shirley was a wonderful person. I knew her at work here in Denver and then beyond that we continued to be friends. She was so comforting to me when my mother passed away. Shirley just knew how to relate to people, to comfort and to share God’s love. What a dear person and I will certainly miss her.
