Shirley Maxine Turner, age 101, of Council Bluffs, formerly of Pacific Junction, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 at her residence in Council Bluffs.
Shirley was born on February 4, 1924, in Richardson County, Nebraska, to John and Maureen (Smith) Halterman. She grew up in Humboldt, Nebraska, and later moved to California to join Otis Turner, who was serving in the Navy. On May 19, 1945, Shirley and Otis were united in marriage at the United Methodist Church in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. They initially lived in Omaha before settling in Pacific Junction, Iowa, where they raised four children: Otis Jr., Steve, Larry, and Carmen. Shirley worked at Offutt Air Force Base and later spent 25 years working at the Glenwood Resource Center before retiring in 1986. Otis Sr. passed away on November 6, 1998.
Shirley was known for her love of the sun, swimming, roller skating and all things Elvis. In her later years she enjoyed traveling, riding her bicycle, animals, going to the casino, and spending time with her loving companion, Arthur Garges.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Otis, two sisters, Beverly Durfey and Donna Meyers-Hicks, and one brother, Bud Halterman.
She is survived by her companion, Arthur Garges; three sons; Otis Turner Jr. (Connie) of Pacific Junction, Steve Turner (Shelly) of Glenwood, and Larry Turner (Marlene) of Pacific Junction; one daughter, Carmen Scroggs (Jack) of Pacific Junction; numerous grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, and friends.
