INTERMENT: Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, Iowa
Thelma Elaine (Davis) Irick, 92, of Glenwood, IA, entered into eternal rest on January 24, 2010 in Council Bluffs, IA. She was born August 9, 1917 near Imogene, IA to George & Ona (Vanderpool) Davis. She was the fourth of ten children.
Thelma graduated from Malvern High School in 1935 and then went to work at the coffee shop of the Delmonico Hotel in Shenandoah, where she met Irvin Irick, a desk clerk at the hotel. They were united in marriage on April 23, 1938 in Council Bluffs, IA. To this union two children were born, Barbara Kay and Wayne Eugene.
After residing in Shenandoah, Omaha, NE and Corning, IA, the family settled in Glenwood in 1953. Thelma and Irvin owned and operated a tavern for a few years. They sold the business, and Irvin went back to work in the hotel business. Thelma worked in several different businesses in Glenwood, including Lee’s CafÌ©, Johnny’s CafÌ© and Regal Jewelry. She began work at Charleson’s Ready-to-Wear and worked at that location for 17 years with four different owners, finally Coatney’s until she resigned to work with Irvin in Irick’s Grocery on Locust Street. After ten years, Thelma and Irvin retired in 1983.
After retirement, Thelma and Irvin joined the First Congregational United Church of Christ, where Thelma became an active participant, serving on the Board of Trustees, joining Dorcas Society, contributing her time and talents to dinners, fundraisers and other activities.
Although she worked outside the home for most of her life, her true joy was her family, friends, and home. She loved homemaking, cooking and baking, sewing, quilting, and crafts. Her family and friends looked forward to receiving gifts of baked goods, candy, or handcrafted items. Her greatest legacy is the values she displayed-faith, hard work, tolerance, caring and sharing.
Preceding Thelma in death were her parents, parents-in-law, husband, four sisters and 2 brothers. She is survived by her children, Barbara Kay (Irick) & husband Robert Chambers of Essex, Iowa; Wayne Eugene & wife Dianna Irick of Glenwood, IA; granddaughters, Kelli & husband John Nardone of Omaha, NE & their children Devin, Johnny & Dominic; Tanya & husband Shawn Newman of Omaha, NE & their son Caden; step-granddaughters, Tracee & husband Colby Karlson & daughter Selma of Olympia, WA; Amy & husband Chris Holiday & sons Andrew & Matthew of Glenwood, IA; brothers; C.E.
