INTERMENT: Glenwood Cemetery, Glenwood, Iowa
Virginia Lorraine Slaughter was born on November 19, 1914 to John Elijah and Clara Vida (Andrews) Slaughter in the family home in the Hillsdale, Iowa community, east of Glenwood. She was a member of the Waubonsie Community Church growing up until services were discontinued. She later joined Hillsdale Methodist Church after moving to Glenwood.
She attended Hillsdale country school and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1932. She taught herself to play the piano as a young woman and was very talented. On March 24, 1937, she married Amos Jensen of rural Glenwood at the parsonage of the Congregational Church in Glenwood, officiated by her mother’s cousin, Fred Long.
They moved to their farm home about 10 miles south of Glenwood, where they lived for 57 years. Virginia was a housewife, raising their family of five, Judy, Allan, Linda, Francis and Carroll. In the 50’s Virginia worked as a floral designer for Glenwood Florist. She then worked at the Glenwood State School, serving as supervisor until her retirement in the 70’s. As their children grew up and moved to different parts of the country, Virginia and Amos loved to travel to see them.
In 1994, Amos and Virginia moved to their new home in Glenwood where she had perennials planted all around the house, and especially loved her roses outside her front door and the huge lupines that grew along one side of her home. Amos entered Glen Haven Home in the fall of 1995 and Virginia devotedly visited him daily until his death in February of 2002. In that same year, their daughter Linda died.
Never having pets allowed inside the house when the kids were growing up, we were all surprised and pleased when she welcomed two feline friends, Petie and Tootie to move in with her. They were good buddies to her. In 2004, Virginia was one of the first to move into the new Linnwood Estates Assisted Living Residence in Glenwood. In 2005, she moved to the Ashland Care Center to be near her daughter, Judy. She made many new friends and enjoyed the many activities they had to offer. Virginia passed away in her sleep on March 16, 2009 at the Ashland Care Center at age 94. Family surviving her are four children, Judy (Gene) Hull, Ashland, NE; Allan (Lynda) Jensen, Marshall, MO; Francis (Glenda) Jensen, Yakima, WA; Carroll (Suzanne) Jensen, Glenwood, IA; son-in-law Jerry (Linda) Abbe, Phoenix, AZ; Sister, Janice Hunt, Glenwood, IA; Seven grandchildren Jill Hull, Chris Jensen, Julie McCowan, Emily Daley, Jeff, Matt & Nick Jensen. Seven great-grandchildren Alex Bender, Elizabeth, Sarah & James Daley, Josh McCowan, Larsen and Olivia Jensen; sister-in-law Lois Obrochta of Montgomery, IL, and special friend, Myrna Carr of Sioux City, IA; Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Amos, daughter Linda, brothers, Drayton and Theron Slaughter and sister Ardis Pace.

1 Condolence
I have to say that I so enjoyed every visit I had with Virginia while cleaning her home and apartment when she moved. What a neat lady. We spent hours talking about living on the farm, and all the canning and baking, gardening, and farm work. It was always a pleasure going to her home. I received a Christmas card from her last year and it was treasured. I am so sorry for your loss, and at the same time I take pleasure in thinking that she is with her husband now, and free of pain and once again able to move like she did when she was on the farm. She treasured those years and her family.
