Willard Martin Stivers, 91, of Glenwood, Iowa entered into eternal rest on February 2, 2009 in Glenwood, Iowa. He was born May 14, 1917 in Cedar Creek, Nebraska to Robert Martin and Nina Cecil (Clark) Stivers.

Willard graduated from Glenwood High School in 1936. Willard was united in marriage to Augusta Miller. To this union one son, Larry was born. He faithfully served his country during WWII from 1943-46. Augusta passed away in 1958. On August 30, 1959, Willard was united in marriage to Betty Louis Baldwin. She and her son Kim joined Willard and Larry. Marty was later born to this union. The family resided in Glenwood where Willard managed the Safeway Grocery store, and eventually owned and operated the EZ Shop. Willard later worked for Bill Nissen Ford.

He was an active member of the First Christian Church serving in several capacities, including Elder, Trustee and Chairperson. He was also active in the Young Peoples Christian Association and Glenwood Public Library serving as Trustee and Chairman there as well. In addition, he served two terms on the Senior Citizens Board and was a past Rotary Club President.

In 1942, Willard joined the Glenwood Volunteer Fire Department. He was a firefighter from 1942-58 and Chief from 1959-88. During his 46 years of service to the department, he held numerous offices and the department received both state and national recognition for fire prevention under Willard’s leadership.

Willard has received numerous awards including, K.M.A. Radio Pride Award Outstanding Community Volunteer, Rotary Club Citizen of the Month, Woodmen of the World Outstanding Citizen, Glenwood Community Service Award and Glenwood Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year”.

Preceding Willard in death were his parents, first wife Augusta and three sisters. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty Stivers of Glenwood, Iowa; sons, Larry & wife Jan Stivers of Quartzsite, Arizona; Kim & wife Mary Stivers of Lakeville, Minnesota; Marty & wife Lisa Stivers of Glenwood, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, extended relatives and a host of friends.
